Position Summary & Description
Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for full-time and temporary, Mason position(s) in Facilities Operations for the Grounds Department, Sidewalk Program for the 2018 Summer Program.
Main Campus:
7:00 am - 3:00 pm
Monday - Friday
Beginning Mid May, 2018 through Late August 2018
This is skilled masonry work at the journey level in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings and structures.
An employee in this class performs masonry work on floors, walls, buildings, sewers, and a variety of other structures or installations. Work involves the exercise of independent judgment in determining work methods and procedures and may include lead work over helpers. Employees receive assignments orally and in written form from a mason foreman or other supervisor who also inspects completed work for compliance with specifications.
Examples of duties:
Lays tile, brick, terra cotta, cinder blocks, and stone to construct floors, walls, partitions, arches, chimneys, and other structures; and pours and finishes concrete walks, floors, steps, walls, and other structures.
Builds and repairs sewers, conduits, inlets, and manholes.
Lays fire brick to build and line furnace walls, roofs, and fireboxes of boilers, furnaces, and incinerators.
Makes estimates of time and materials.
Functions as a lead worker over employees helping with masonry projects by assigning work, providing assistance, instructing workers, and reviewing the work for adherence to standards.
Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices of the masonry trade.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to care for and use the standard tools and equipment of the masonry trade.
Ability to make estimates of time and materials.
Ability to interpret and work from pencil sketches and drawings.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to work at heights from scaffolding and ladders.
Minimum Education and Training
Four years of experience in the masonry trades, or completion of an approved apprenticeship; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities.

Candidates must have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.
The salary for this position is determined by the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. External applicants will be offered the minimum rate of pay for this position which is $16.79 per hour.
Essential Functions
This position is heavily involved in outdoor activity and has periods of heavy exertion. Incumbents must have the following abilities:
Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
To work under a variety of adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust and snow.
To be able to work extended hours under adverse conditions in response to emergency conditions.
To work in hazardous situations such as around moving heavy equipment, in and around traffic, at heights, on steep grades, and on ladders and uneven surfaces.
Employee must be able to observe and react to hazardous warnings, back-up alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals.
To perform manual laboring duties such as lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
Setting up, operating, testing and measuring equipment.
Using hand tools such as hammers and pry bars, and taking and transporting material samples.
Work often requires stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
To withstand exposure to chemical agents, exhaust gases and lubricants, solvents, poisonous plants, animals, and insects and potential injuries such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, strains and sprains.
To wear all types of required protective gear such as a hard hat, footgear, hearing and eye protection, gloves and respirators.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
