Position Summary & Description
Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for full-time and temporary, Painter position(s) in Facilities Operations for the Office of Housing and Residence Life Maintenance for the 2018 Summer Program.
Main Campus:
7:00 am - 3:00 pm
Monday - Friday
Beginning Mid May, 2018 through Late August, 2018
This is skilled work in painting a variety of wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces.
An employee in this class applies a variety of paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces by accepted application tools and techniques, such as brushes, rollers, and spray guns. Work involves the preparation of finished or unfinished surfaces and the color matching of paints in accordance with standard practices of the painting trade. Duties may include performing lead work over helpers or other maintenance staff. Work assignments are received through written work orders or verbal instructions. Work is performed with independence on projects and is reviewed by a Painter Foreman or maintenance supervisor for timely completion of projects and compliance with specifications and standards.
Examples of work
Applies water-based or oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to a variety of interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
Prepares surfaces to be painted by stripping paint and sanding surfaces using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, or vacuum-type sanders.
Performs minor repairs to surfaces to be painted using spackle, plaster, or other appropriate materials.
Assembles and disassembles scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders; cleans brushes, rollers, spray guns, and work areas; and makes minor repairs to
Removes glazing compound, replaces broken glass, and re-glazes window panes.
Caulks window frames, doorframes, and other areas.
Applies wallpaper or vinyl covering.
Functions as a lead worker over helpers and other maintenance staff by assigning work, providing on-the-job training and assistance, and reviewing
projects for adherence to specifications and standards.
Performs related work as required.

Position Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, tools, methods and techniques of the painting trade.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety practices of the painting trade.
Ability to apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray guns to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
Ability to use and maintain paint brushes, rollers, spray guns and other painting tools and equipment.
Ability to mix paints and match and blend colors and finishes with surrounding surfaces.
Ability to work at heights from scaffolding and ladders.
Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions.
Ability to make routine decisions in the absence of on-site supervision.
Ability to lift and move objects weighing fifty pounds or less.
Minimum Education and Training
Four years of experience in the painting trade or completion of an approved apprenticeship or
An equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

The salary for this position is determined by the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. External applicants will be offered the minimum rate of pay for this position which is $16.79 per hour. Essential Functions
This position is heavily involved in outdoor activity and has periods of heavy exertion. Incumbents must have the following abilities:
Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
To work under a variety of adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust and snow.
To be able to work extended hours under adverse conditions in response to emergency conditions.
To work in hazardous situations such as around moving heavy equipment, in and around traffic, at heights, on steep grades, and on ladders and uneven surfaces.
Employee must be able to observe and react to hazardous warnings, back-up alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals.
To perform manual laboring duties such as lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
Setting up, operating, testing and measuring equipment.
Using hand tools such as hammers and pry bars, and taking and transporting material samples.
Work often requires stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
To withstand exposure to chemical agents, exhaust gases and lubricants, solvents, poisonous plants, animals, and insects and potential injuries such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, strains and sprains.
To wear all types of required protective gear such as a hard hat, footgear, hearing and eye protection, gloves and respirators.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
